Yesterday Adam had the honor of presenting to the Broward County School Board. Ms. Lori Alhadeff, a member of the school board, mother of Alyssa Alhadeff, who lost her life in the MSD Tragedy in 2018, and founder of Make School Safe, invited him to speak. He spoke about the new Florida rule that every middle and high school needs to incorporate mental social emotional education into the curriculum. He said that he thinks 5 hours is a good start, but not enough, and also thinks this programming needs to begin in elementary school or even pre-school. He had 8 minutes to convince them why this curriculum is so important to reducing depression, anxiety, bullying, anger, suicide, and homicide. At the end of the presentation, Ms. Laurie Rich Levinson asked Supt. Runcie if he’d like to include Adam on the Mindfulness Committee he formed to get these programs into schools. Mr. Runcie immediately extended the offer for Adam to participate, and he’s looking forward to it. As he says in his speech, we have to unite to implement mindful and social emotional programs into schools K-12, and it has to start now, in schools, if we are going to change the world.
